With the vegetable dyeing methods it is easy to create natural dyes that are fixed with mineral compounds: iron, copper and alum etc … The color is extracted from any vegetable and cooked with minerals and unimaginable shades are achieved. The fabrics will be resistant to subsequent washing, but should be kept where the direct sun does not arrive.
Materials
- Silk fabric 90×90 cm (35g) *Also cotton OK.
- Onion skin 15g
- One sachet of rock alum (Mordent)
- Shibori tools
Materials to prepare
- White vinegar 30ml
- Water 3-4 L
- Two pot for 4-5L
- Net bag (If necessary)
Coloring
1.Prepare pot 1, pour 3L of water and add a pack of peels and soak the worked fabric and turn on the fire.
2.As soon as the water boils, lower the heat and cook for about 30 minutes, stirring the fabric.
3.After 30 minutes, turn off the heat and leave it for half an hour until the water has cooled so the colors hold longer.
Mordant
4. While we wait for the color to cool, prepare pot 2. Pour 3L of water into the pot and boil. As soon as it boils, add 1 teaspoon of Alum and immerse the fabric.
5. Cook for about 20 minutes over low heat, stirring constantly. After 20 minutes, remove it and squeeze it well and remove the tools and rinse with water.
6.Prepare 2L of water and add 30ml of white vinegar and immerse the colored fabric and leave to rest for 20 min. After 20 min, rinse it with soap and spread it out of direct light and dry it. Iron with the iron at low temperature (40 ° c).
